If your trade-in vehicle qualifies, you’ll receive a purchase offer that can be applied towards your order. If you decide to trade in your vehicle, you will hand off the vehicle during your delivery appointment.

We accept passenger cars, trucks, vans and SUVs for trade-in value towards a new or used Tesla vehicle purchase. Internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles and electric vehicles (EV) are acceptable for trade in.
We do not accept motorcycles, RVs or commercial vehicles. Non-drivable vehicles are also not accepted for trade in. See below for eligibility of branded vehicles.

After your order is placed and a VIN has been assigned, a Tesla Advisor will contact you to start the trade-in process. In order to receive a trade-in offer, you must submit details such as your VIN, mileage, zip code and photos in your Tesla Account. We will contact you when your trade-in offer is ready for review. Trade-in vehicles must be dropped at your delivery appointment.
Any applicable positive equity can be applied towards the purchase of your new or used Tesla vehicle. If you have negative equity, it must be paid either at delivery or rolled into your financing agreement (pending credit approval).

Yes. You can trade in your vehicle if you are still making finance payments. We will calculate and compare the pay-off amount and any equity (positive or negative) that will be added to your Motor Vehicle Purchase Agreement.
Note: Refrain from paying off your lease or loan in full prior to trading in your vehicle. Any delays in the title receipt may delay your delivery date.

If you are actively financing your trade-in and your title is held by a lender in one of these states, request a ‘Letter of Guarantee’ or digital image of the title from your lienholder to provide to your Tesla Advisor prior to your delivery appointment.

Trade-in vehicles must be properly titled in the United States to be eligible for trade in. A physical title is required if you are not actively financing or leasing your trade-in vehicle, or if you are making finance payments in KY, MD, MI, MN, MO, MT, NY, OK or WY.

Non-Tesla vehicles with a salvage, rebuilt, lemon, junk, recycled or not actual miles (NAM) branded title are eligible for a trade-in so long as the vehicle’s title branding has been completed with the relevant state. The face of your vehicle title should display the appropriate branding or the vehicle will not qualify for a trade-in.

As your delivery date approaches, you will be asked to submit your trade-in details in your Tesla Account. Once submitted, we will provide a trade-in offer based on current market conditions. Trade-in offers are valid for 30 days or 1,000 miles, whichever comes first, and are contingent on the information you provide about the vehicle being accurate.

In addition to adding credit toward your vehicle purchase, several states offer an incentive for trading in your vehicle in the form of a sales tax credit. If you live in one of the following states, you may be eligible: AR, AZ, CO, CT, FL, ID, IN, KS, MA, MN, MO, NC, NJ, NM, NV, NY, OH, PA, TN, UT, WA, WV, WY.
If applicable, the value of your trade in vehicle will be subtracted from the purchase price of your new Tesla vehicle before state sales tax is calculated, meaning you pay less sales tax at the time of your final payment. For example, if you’re purchasing a new Tesla vehicle for $60,000 and you’re trading in a vehicle valued at $10,000, the sales tax for your purchase would be calculated as if you were equal to purchasing a $50,000 vehicle.
In some states (GA, MD, SC, TX), you’ll pay the sales tax for the entire purchase price upfront but you may receive a tax credit accounting for the extra sales tax when you file your state taxes.

All owners listed on the trade-in vehicle title and/or registration must be present at delivery to sign the trade-in documentation. Failure to have these individuals present could result in delayed delivery.

We are not responsible for reporting the trade-in transaction to your state’s motor vehicle department. You may be required to notify your state’s motor vehicle department of the pending transaction after your trade-in documents are complete and your trade-in vehicle has been transferred to us. For additional details, check with your state’s motor vehicle department.

Before trading in your vehicle, the vehicle owner must clear any data and restore it to factory settings. This ensures that all your personal information is removed before you trade in your vehicle. We will not check whether you have cleared your data and we are not responsible for ensuring that your personal data is removed from your trade-in vehicle.
If you are trading in a non-Tesla vehicle, check your owner’s manual for guidance on removing your data. If you are trading in a Tesla vehicle, tap ‘Controls’ > ‘Service’ > ‘Factory Reset’ on your touchscreen to clear your data and restore to factory settings.

If you sell or trade in your vehicle that is currently enrolled in Full Self-Driving (FSD) Beta, it is not transferable to your new Tesla vehicle. You can request FSD Beta from your new vehicle by selecting ‘Controls’ > ‘Autopilot’ > ‘Request Full Self-Driving Beta’ on your vehicle touchscreen.
